about

This compilation is a collective effort initially organized by Garrett Caufield in support of and in solidarity with the People of Red Mountain in their fight to keep the sacred land of PeeHee Mu'huh safe from the Lithium Nevada's plans to install a mine on it.

More information on their efforts can be found here:

Gary McKinney, Shoshone Paiute of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation and relation/representative of the People of Red Mountain, gave this statement for the compilation:

"Life over lithium! Life over lithium means that for us as human beings, as people, as spiritual beings, the time to reconnect with the land and to have the discussions and speak about the histories and the future is now. We hear it in music, we hear it in the news, and that's one thing, but like John Trudell says, a lot of the time we're encouraged to be good workers, good employees, but hardly ever encouraged to be good human beings. Music is a good way to uplift somebody, and art is beautiful and a way of using your voice.
To get into it: 2022 is the year we're fighting the Thacker Pass open pit lithium mine, for cultural reasons, for environmental reasons, because it's been going on for too long, you know. We have to use the tools that were given to us, the gifts and abilities that were given to us, to spread the word. Whether that be through music, or through art, or speaking to people, or singing, or using your drum, whatever it is you can get your hands on to be progressive in getting the word out is all good, it's all positive. It's our turn now to step up to the plate. It's our turn now to listen and ask the questions and be respectful, honorable, caring human beings. We can do it, instead of taking away from the land and from the people, taking away rights and the ability to consult with one another on things like a big mining project.
I'll say, this music here, it'll captivate you, and using every opportunity and every avenue to come together, to listen to one another, that's what this compilation disc is for: to honor these qualities in us humans; caring for each other, caring for the land, the water, the animals, and the roots and medicines. We keep it clean, we keep it good. Nobody wants to be stepped on, nobody wants to be kicked when they're down, and so this is all about respect, all around the board. Not just here, but all over the place, all over Turtle Island, in whatever
community out there is being affected by the extraction industries. We feel you, we stand with you. It's happening now, through music. Let's connect, let's get it, let's continue to be beautiful Indigenous people, because that's what the Creator intended. We intend to carry on
this fight here, not just for Thacker Pass but 10, 30, 40 years down the road. We want to be together, because that's the way it should be: building that hoop back up again."

Here are a few words from Garrett Caufield regarding this compilation:

"If you're reading this, let me thank you for purchasing this compilation and aiding the efforts to protect Peehee Mu'huh against the ruthless forces of global capital and extractive industry.
Peehee Mu'huh is magickal, sacred, and special place, located within the vast and paradisiacal Great Basin. I've been lucky enough to call the Great Basin my home for the past 14 years, and in that time I've come to view this land with awed respect; for its valleys, its mountains that hold such life, and for the sacred connection that exists between the land and the people Indigenous to it. I have also come to understand that since the times of the first Euro-American settlers in this place, its history has been dominated not by connection and care but rather by exploitation and cruelty, by the forced termination of Indigenous lifeways and the extraction of shiny metals from the heart of the earth for the enrichment of a few. First it was gold, then silver, then copper, all their takers leaving behind contaminated earth and extorted communities. Now the goal is lithium. Peehee Mu'huh, a place rich in life-force and meaning, is apparently also rich in minerals and the greedy gaze of the capitalists lies upon it.
We must declare without reservation that the continued enrichment of the few is not worth more than the land, the soil, the water, the animals of the earth and sky, or the prayers of the people, even when it comes bearing gifts and wearing the cloak of "green technology". There are thousands of ways to resist this march to destruction, and the People of Red Mountain are the vanguard of land and water defense at Peehee Mu'huh. As a musician, and somebody with many friends who are artists all around this beautiful land, I believed my greatest contribution to this fight would be to create and compile music which could inspire people to interest and action, as well as to raise funds
in support of those who are on the ground, on the frontlines. This compilation is an attempt to do just that.

Special thanks to all the bands and musicians who contributed tracks, Chris Monzon/Star Domain, Andrea Elizabeth, Ilya Arbatman,
Ana Perez-McKay, Gary McKinney, and the People of Red Mountain. Much love!"
